To: alt.magick.order,alt.magick.tyagi,alt.magick From: CavalornSubject: Re: Rant about COTO (was: The Golden CON) Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 13:38:48 +0100 In article <5osehg$hp8@kudo20.kudonet.com>, "nigris (333)" quoted Bill Heidrick thus: >For the record, there is no COTO; but >#that which is called by that acronym here appears to be the OTO simply, as >#formerly led by Reuss, Crowley, Germer, McMurtry and now Fr. Hymenaeus >#Beta. "COTO" was a term of abuse used by Motta and SOTO in a legal case in >#the 1980's. Look, you may consider yourselves to be the only legitimate claimants to the title of OTO, but don't expect the rest of the world to humour you in that. The above attempt to manipulate public perception of your Order is obvious and unconvincing. The feigned ingenuousness of 'that which is called by that acronym here _appears_ to be the OTO simply' is particularly insulting to the intelligence of the reader. There is no one true OTO. Everyone knows that, but you persist in denying it. What you choose to call yourselves in your own internal discussions is your own affair. As far as public discussion is concerned, Caliphate OTO you are, and Caliphate OTO you remain, as distinct from Typhonian OTO, SOTO, OTOF, the Swiss OTO, or any other lineage. In point of fact, Caliphate OTO groups have been referring to themselves as such for years, despite the fact that the upper echelons of that group would now prefer that they did not. There is more tolerance and open-mindedness among the lower levels of membership than the higher. No clumsy sequestering of formal titles, no purchase of copyrights, no stockpiling of relics will give you the magickal legitimacy and monopoly that you so blatantly crave. You are more transparent than you like to believe. Adrian Bott -- 'If I can't have my evenings off with cocoa and animal crackers, I don't want to be your Bitch Goddess.' (Pat Califia)
