To: alt.magick.tyagi,alt.magick.order From: tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com (mordred) Subject: BHeidrick: Re: New Dawn Date: 27 Jun 1995 21:50:03 -0700 [from alt.magick: heidrick@well.sf.ca.us (Bill Heidrick)] 93, evaughan@gte.com (Elizabeth Vaughan) writes: >Could someone tell me how the O.T.O. which traces its roots to Aleister >Crowley is different from The Golden Dawn? This is difficult for two reasons: 1. The O.T.O. doesn't trace its roots to Aleister Crowley. Crowley was only the third head of the O.T.O., having joined it over a decade after it was founded. Crowley led O.T.O. from c. 1923 e.v. to 1947 e.v. We owe a great deal to him, including the current revisions of our initiation rituals and the Thelemic orientation of the Order. Crowley gave us his copyrights, so the our debt to him is both spiritual and material. However, he had nothing to do with the origin of O.T.O. and very little to do with the form and internal structure of the Order. 2. There is nothing but a descent from Masons in common between O.T.O. and the Golden Dawn. There is some interest in related subjects, but the Golden Dawn uses the Qabalistic Tree of Life as a model for its grades and O.T.O. uses a mixture of Masonic degrees and Kundalini Yoga as a model for its degrees. The two orders have less in common than a sailboat and a writing desk. Crowley was a member of the Golden Dawn for a few years only, long after it was founded and without significant influence on it. However, Crowley did create A.'.A.'., his version of a continuation or replacement for the Golden Dawn. A.'.A.'. has only Crowley and Thelema in common with O.T.O. 93 93/93 Bill Heidrick, Grand Treasurer General O.T.O.
