To: alt.satanism From: xeper@aol.com (Xeper) Subject: Bancroft re LaVey _MIR_ Intro Date: 8 May 1997 16:26:48 GMT Recently a reprint edition of Ragnar Redbeard's _Might is Right_ was issued containing an Introduction by Anton LaVey. While Anton does not acknowledge nor apologize for his plagiarism of _MIR_ as the "Book of Satan" in his _Satanic Bible_, he makes the following statements: "My evidence indicates that Jack London wrote _MIR_. If he didn't, he thought enough of it to transcribe it ... My sources were Sibley Morrill and Virginia Harner ... Some of Jack London's unreleased writings were stored at the prestigious Bancroft Library, where Mrs. Harner worked as a longtime custodian and researcher ... Mrs. Harner and Mr. Morrill arranged to let me see the 'forbidden' London material. Among stacks of manuscripts appeared entire sections of _MIR_ in Jack London's own hand." On 4/23/97 I sent a copy of the LaVey introduction to the Bancroft Library inquiring about this, and have just received the answer attached below. Michael A. Aquino, Ph.D. * * * * * THE BANCROFT LIBRARY University of California Berkeley, California 94720 May 1, 1997 Dear Dr. Aquino: Thank you for your interesting letter of April 23rd. The details you inclosed about Jack London, "Ragnar Redbeard", and _Might is Right_ appear completely unjustified. 1. The Bancroft Library has no copy whatsoever of _MIR_ either in manuscript or in print. 2. There are no London manuscripts in Bancroft which are "withheld/unreleased/forbidden". Our London collection is modest, fully catalogued, open to research, and, as it happens, much of it is available on the web at: http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/London/ 3. There is no record of a Virginia Harner as a library employee in any capacity at any time. From the point of view of the Bancroft Library, Mr. LaVey's claims are totally baseless. I cannot speculate on his motives for making them. Sincerely yours, Anthony S. Bliss Curator, Rare Books & Literary Manuscripts
