Burton Wolfe's 1974 "biography" [I think that both it and _Secret Life of a Satanist_ are probably autobiographies attributed to Wolfe & Barton respectively] states that he dropped out of high school in his Junior year. Lawrence Wright in _Rolling Stone_ 9/5/91: "According to the San Francisco Police Department, no one named Howard or Anton LaVey or Levey ever worked for the force, nor does City College have a record of his enrollment. Frank Moser, a retired police officer who worked in the photo department during that time, says that LaVey was never in that department under any name." >I myself always wondered about the "Doctor" title that you see once in awhile. Self-assumed. >If not by this, how should one address Anton LaVey? "Reverend"? >Or would that be the last thing you'd want to call him? In the original Church of Satan we toyed with "Irreverend" for the Priesthood, but decided that it would sound flippant. So "Reverend" was used for Priests & Priestesses III*, "Magister" for Masters of the Cavern/Temple/Grand Master IV*, and "Magus" for Magus V* (Anton's degree). You could legitimately address him as "Magus LaVey" on that criterion. Michael A. Aquino, Ph.D.
