Most of my biographical info about > GG comes from Doreen Valiente, who seems to suggest that he retired from > service in the Far East shortly after WWII and returned to England. I was surprised when I discovered this as well (the letter in the Ransome collection originates from Pennsylvania). I gather that in Autumn 1947 he came over to the US, and was still here in early 1948, since he writes to Gerald Yorke that he was in the US at the time of Crowley's death, and only heard about it at that point, some months later (Crowley died in Dec, 1947). Why he was in the US I don't know (possibly knew once...my memory is doing that ticklish thing that happens when a datum is trying to cache back from archival storage to disk space). Paul
