Deosil and Hemispheres

|Several posters have mentioned that deosil is sun-wise and have suggested
|that it be reversed for the Southern Hemisphere. The sun rises in the
|east in the Southern Hemisphere, and sets in the west. No different than
|here up (?) north. Why should we reverse directions for the Southern
|Hemisphere ?

Oh, my dear young Ann, if you are standing to the north of a fence
that runs east-to-west, and you see a cat run along that fence from
east to west, it travels from your left to your right, and in watching
it you swivel your head clockwise.

Your neighbor on the south side of the fence sees that same cat running
the same direction, from east to west, but it is from his right to his
left, and in watching it he swivels his head counterclockwise.

For "cat", read "sun", and you have our hemispheres' situation.

The whole concept of "clockwise" is taken from the old sundials, on
which the sun's shadow travels rightwards along (part of) the dial,
as seen from the center. In the southern hemisphere, the shadow
rotates in the opposite direction.

Thus the "sunwise" and "antisunwise" rotations are reversed on the
other side of the equator (or, more precisely, the ecliptic).

ALONG the equator, I suppose, you can't cast a "circle" at all,
but must run from east to west and back again, then stand in line
to do ritual, having cast your line-segment. ;)
