Okay, I've just (3.11 pm GMT) returned from the Mexican gallery of the
British Museum where I took some notes to do with this subject. Bear in
mind that all of this is based on the displays there and that I don't
claim any personal knowledge.

Exhibit 1: a "cuauhxicalli" - a large urn-like object adorned with some
stylised carvings that the placard says represent human

Exhibit 2: a wooden knife with... a chalcedony stone blade -
Mixtec-Aztec, made 1400x1521 CE. Part of the placard reads
"The knife was used for human sacrifice made in the belief
that blood offerings kept the sun on its course".

Exhibit 3: a Mayan carved display made 770 CE - this portrays, according
to the accompanying placard, Bird Jaguar and one of his wives,
           Lady Balan-Ix, blood-letting.

Exhibit 4: at least one more Mayan carved display made 770 CE -
           portraying blood-letting.

Exhibit 5: a Mayan carved display made about 725 CE - also portraying

Exhibit 6: a Mayan carved display made 755x770 CE - eight days after the
main event portrayed (another incident from the life of Bird
Jaguar), Bird Jaguar's heir Shield Jaguar II was born and his
birth was followed by ritual blood-letting.

Exhibit 7: a Mayan carved display made 28 October 709 CE (Mayan date:
5 eb 15 mac) - In this Lord Shield Jaguar holds
a blood-letting ritual with his main wife, Lady Xoc.

Exhibit 8: a shell pendant made 900x1450 CE, Huaxtec - this portrays
decapitation. An earth deity drinks the resultant blood.

Exhibit 9: a description of a ball game after which a decapitation ritual
           could take place.

I hope this is of some interest and I'd be interested to hear your
