It first appears in a medieval work of dubious (possibly: anti-Rabbinic) origin called "the Alphabet of Ben Sira" and then found its way into various mystical/Kabbalistic writings. It is a marginal tradition that has been overused by writers who usually do not have the competence to check the sources. See: http://www.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/950206_Lilith.html
