Whenever the Hebrew Bible is read aloud the divine name "YHVH" is
pronounced "Adonai", in order to avoid speaking the actual name of God
and risking a violation of the 3rd commandment. In actuality, it would
be impossible today to deliberately pronounce the divine name, because
vowels were not written down in ancient times and nobody today has any
idea what they were. "Jehovah" was created by adding the vowels from
"Adonai" to "YHVH". (And somewhere in the process of transliterating
from Hebrew to Latin to English the initial "Y" became a "J".)
