Note that you have to recite it backwards (though Huson provides a
phonetic spelling of it in reverse)

This was a traditional means of obtaining witch power in Appalachian
folklore, but their witches are closer to the ones on TV - different
race, longer lived, etc, like on Bewitched or Sabrina.

Huson presents the ritual as a formal renunciation of the fetters of
traditions and taboo imposed by Christianity. It can be omitted.
