this is a common factor in some forms of magick, including some sigil
magicks and chaos magick. the idea behind it is not only to keep you
from worrying about the spell, but to remove the spell or sigil from
the conscious mind entirely, giving it over completely to the
subconscious and letting the subconscious work on it. this is often
done through banishing by laughter. grounding out by preparing and
consuming a meal also works, and some of my friends have been known to
blob out in front on the telley for awhile after spellwork,
purposefully allowing the notorious "idiot box" to turn their minds to
jelly while the crunch down half a box of cheez-its. (i also find
having to change a really nasty diaper on a struggling toddler will
remove any thoughts of spellwork from your mind as well, whether you
want it to or not!) the idea is to submerge yourself in the mundane
clutter the conscious mind so loves, distracting it so that the
subconscious can do its work.

is it necessary? i don't know. i guess that depends entirely on your
personal philosophy about magickal practice and how magick works.

never thirst,
