Gazmuth,

There is a brief biography of Francis Barret, 1765-1825, Kabbalist,
Hermetic and Magean Initiate, interpreter of Trithemius, Supreme Grand
Master; Member of the Council of Three and Order of the Rose in the Book
of Rosicruciae, Vol III. It mentions he was a true Unknown or Inconnu
and that little is known about him except for his work: The Book of the
Magi. I does give a brief description of ten lessons from his book. It
also mentions he was familiar with the methods used by Saint Germain and
Count Cagliostro with Magic Mirrors and the Mysteries of P.B. Randolph's
Sleep of Sialam.

The Book of Rosicruciae may be found at
.

Harold:

This is fascinating! As a romantic I find myself charmed by this
glamorization of Barrett -- but as a scholar I find myself
underwhelmed. Hockley, who really was an adept, held Barrett
in contempt, knowing that he (Barrett) had lifted most of *The
Magus* directly from material one of Hockley's friends had lent
to Barrett (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Agrippa.) Hockley ended up
with both the copyright and the lithoplates for Barrett's book.
Perhaps the truth lies somewhere between these two poles.
I hope so, because, as a young magician, I was enchanted
with Barrett's book. It seemed to be the master key (remember,
L.W. DeLaurence ripped off Barrett's ripoff when he republished
The Magus as *The Great Book of Hindoo Magic*.) I think it
would be a worthy project for a small press to reissue a 3rd
annotated edition of *The Magus*, with all Barrett's mistakes
corrected and his sources noted, in an attractive old-style hardback.
It would be a treasure.
