Obviously like any cultural tradition (either folkloric or uban), a mgaicl object like a mojo bag will work best and most easily for those to whom it something culturally familiar. (Analogy #1: many black Americans become proficient at baseball; few Amazonian Indians do -- it's not that the Amazonian Indians are less athletic, merely that they were not raised around the concept of baseball. Analogy #2:many Amazonian Indians are adept at mixing up psychedelic snuff from wild plants and using it for visionary and magical purposes; few Latino kids from East Palo Alto ever do this -- it's not that the Latino kids are less visionary, merely that they were not raised around the concept of gathering psychedelic plants in the wild and compounding them into snuff to be used in visionary rites.) The querent who started this thread seemed familiar enough with the concept of being magically cursed that when i responded by suggesting a mojo bag, i felt it would make sense to him. By the way, for what it's worth, you can often tell a person's ethnicity from their e-mail or telephone queries about being cursed. I receive hundreds of questions on these subjects every month -- and here are the terms i believe are used most often by various ethnic groups: i have been cursed -- European-American, usually Irish, British, or German there is a curse on my family -- European-American, usually Irish, British, German, or Slavic i have been hexed -- European-American, usually German or Scandinavian someone has put the evil eye on me -- Mediterannean or Eastern European, mostly Italian, Greek, Turkish i have been crossed / i am suffering from crossed conditions -- African-American i have been jinxed -- African-American i have been hoodooed -- African-American i have been root-worked / someone has put roots on me African-American i have been throwed for African-American someone has put down powders for me / laid powders at my door African-American someone has been using that stuff on me African-American i have been having a run of bad luck African-American and Deep-South European-Amercian i have an unnatural illness / the medical doctors can do no good African-American and Deep-South European-Amercian cat yronwode Lucky Mojo Spells Archive ------ http://www.luckymojo.com/spells.html The Esoteric Archive --------- http://www.luckymojo.com/esoteric.html No personal e-mail, please; just catch me in usenet; i read it daily.
