Could be either, but he said "on" rather than "in" and i assumed he meant oil for dressing free-standing candles. The increased use of glass-encased candles in hoodoo dates from the era of cultural blending with Latin American practices, circa the 1970s. Many old-time hoodoos still don't use the glass candles, though, because you can only dribble the oil in, rather than rub it on the candle. Some people use a nail to punch holes in the top of the soft wax in the glass-encased candles and fill the holes with oil. Or they may use a nail to scribe their name or a wish in the top and fill it with oil. People who use pull-outs, which are candles that slide into the glass holders, are able to put the name on paper at the bottom and rub the candle with oil in the old way before inserting the pull-out into the glass. Some folks, especially those with asthma, use the oil on incandescent light bulbs and never burn anything, but the aroma gets around just the same. > I presume nobody tries burning the oil on its own (like in an Aladin > Special)? Oh, sure, people do that all the time. I've done it. You could even cut it with more almond oil to save money. > blackman99 > > ps congrats on the book! :) Thank you, darlin'! cat yronwode
