To: alt.lucky.w From: "John M. Hansen"Subject: Re: Black Hawk Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 01:22:02 -0400 Abraham Lincoln fought in the 'Black Hawk War,' which took place along the Wisconsin and Illinois border, and headed further up into Wisconsin. His statue, by a sculpture whose daughter was married to the late Senator Douglas from Illinois, stands along the Rock River, across from Oregon Illinois. I do not have the dates for the Black Hawk war, and remember it only because of a rather unusual occurance which I shall now bore you with. One dark and stormy night I was traveling in Wisconsin somewhere nearer the Mississippi river than Lake Michigan, when I stopped for the night at a very run down hotel, the only one I had seen on that road for several hours. I checked in, and for $2.00 or so I received a room for the night. I recall that the bed room was quite small, but that it had very high ceilings. In the morning as I checked out I noticed a dirty paper fixed to the wall in a broken picture frame. It bore a typewritten note to the effect that Abraham Lincoln had stayed in this very same hotel on his route of return from the Black Hawk war. So much for travel accommodations in Wisconsin forty years ago. Black Hawk lead an Indian revolt, and while he was defeated, he apparently managed to make some improvement in the condition of his people. He was a noted Indian chief, as well as gaining a reputation as a warrior. His name graces several spots in both Wisconsin and Illinois. There is also a 'Black Hawk trail,' which wends its way somewhere in Illinois, and is used by boy scouts to complete their twenty mile hike requirement for their first class scout award. Best Wishes, John M. Hansen
