Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 06:44:17 GMT 50030118 VII om Amanda: >> ...I have read that since black is the carrier of all colors, a condition of the cosmos. >> yes-you can use it when you can't specify what color >> you want to use in a spell. presumably, you are describing the justification for using black, in comparison to those who describe it as 'only for harm' or whatever. colour associations are strictly cultural. the potent mage is not culture-bound or dogmatic about colours on the part of use for others. I personally burn black candles for worship service, so I don't know why it should not be an all-purpose (compare the dark "Wick Oil" that can be used for any purpose; I use Black Arts for something similar I regard them as more potent and aligned with my energies). Dara: > Actually, Amanda, black is the absence of all color, the differential is one of light colours and hues, whereas ALL HUES TOGETHER MAKE BLACK ALL LIGHT COLOURS TOGETHER MAKE WHITE the two relations are valuable symbolic lattices but only the foolish make hard and fast associations to justify their hatred. black is the absence of light and the composition of hue. white is all colours of light and the absence of hue. for this reason some separate the two, BLACK and WHITE and give them a polarity in ceremony aligned with light and colour: WHITE DIRECTION OF THE SUN SUNSET [E.G. A TRIO OF COLOUR, EAST/CENTER/WEST] SUNRISE DIRECTION AWAY FROM SUN BLACK as with the Chinese. placement upon the globe determines the Sun direction (those in the center of the lemniscate-path might have a challenge if they wanted to use this system!). > and white that contains all colors. of light it certainly does. a vacuity of hue, however. black as a variable for all-purpose or purity may be in the minority, but there is nothing about light or hue which recommends against it. blackman99
