Evaluating Magical Texts -- tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com ======================================================= this schema constitutes a basic assertion on the categories of evaluation that may be applied to magical texts as to their authority and substance. it is put forward for critique and as prolegomena to further study in the field of magick using the tools of texts as part of the curriculum (as compared to merely studying with human beings directly or experimenting on one's own). I. Variables of Source these deal with the source of the data being evaluated. a. Type of Document whether a spell or list of spells, a list of spirits, a handbook on the methods magical attainment, or some other phylum of text, the type of document can be scrutinized and understood. b. Context of Origin the reputed and discernable time, geographic and cultural origins of a text can be of immense value in discovering its reliability and potency. c. Character of the Historical Author(s) the reputed and probable author, if any may be known, as well as their background and bias are other important factors. II. Variables of Transmission these deal with the data itself and its contents a. Tone of the Speaker the attitude of the speaker or author's spokesperson toward the subject matter, whether they have bias, admit of their limitations, maintain certain metaphysical, ethical or political standards, or in some other manner disclose or conceal their orientation to that which is being presented, is also valuable to assess. b. Relation to the Subject the results that may be obtained (engineering, divinatory, conscription, etc.) in the application of the data, whether detail is provided for it, and under what circumstances (operator, environs) it may be presumed they will be attempted, may be very important, especially for practitioners. others? example documents? a grimoire perhaps, or a modern book? blessed beast! __________________________________________________________________________ nagasiva -- tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com; http://www.hollyfeld.org/~tyagi/ caution: I don't read all posts, filtering out those of < a # of bytes.
