To: alt.magick From: oispeggy@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu (MARGARET MARY-THERESA BROWN, SUNY BUFFALO) Subject: Catholic Folkmagick: Kitchen Prayer Date: 14 Nov 1996 16:23:38 GMT This is part of a continuing series of posts on Roman Catholic folkmagick. Roman Catholocism is a part of the heretical branch of Judaism known as Christianity. It is far too complicated for me to discuss here, except to mention that there is a strong tradition of folkmagick in Catholocism. Much of it has to do with developing a personal relationship with one or more of the saints or angels including -- the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), Jesus the Christ, and occasionally the Holy Ghost/Spirit or God-the-Father. The saint/energy/thoughtform becomes as a real esoteric power. Those into santeria would also find this of interest. (Anti-xtian bigots hit the "next" key now.) ********************************************************* Kitchen Prayer Lord of pots and pans and things, since I've not time to be A saint by doing lovely things or watching late with thee Or dreaming in the dawn light or storming Heaven's gates Make me a saint by getting meals and washing up the plates. Although I must have Martha's hands, I have a Mary mind And when I black the boots and shoes Thy sandals, Lord, I find. I think of how they trod the earth, what time I scrub the floor, Accept this meditation Lord, I haven't time for more. by Klara Munkres ******************************************* This prayer -- along with the sacred hearts of Jesus and the BVM -- is most likely to be taped to a Catholic refrigerator. The main theme is devotional, with a touch of atonement. It also refers not only to the traditional place of women, but of the distinction often made between the sisters St. Martha and St. Mary (the BVM). In addition it touches upon the yoga of service (what is that called?). Anyone who has worked hard, for hours, on tedious tasks knows that there is a certain mindset you can get into that transcends the tedium of the task at hand. Often work of this sort is done by nuns and priests. Ever wonder why, when you turn on the "Kung Fu" t.v. show the little grasshopper is always sweeping? Ha! The yoga of service. Although this has traditionally been a woman's prayer, liberated men are welcome to it as well. - Peggy -
