I think "derided" is too strong a term... The point is that it is a beginner's book. Look upon it as an introduction to the subject only - the real background comes from the work of people like Crowley ("Magick"), Regardie ("The Golden Dawn"), Franz Bardon ("Initiation into Hermetics") etc. There are three criticisms of Kraig's book of which I can think. First - it is not the definitive way of doing magic, just Kraig's opinion of how to do magic. Second, he introduces some subjects - like Enochian magic, for example - but fails to give a thorough explanation of them. Enochian magic is a whole subject in itself, so this is an example of Kraig's book only being an introduction. Thirdly, Kraig synthesises his material from a number of sources and authors, most of whom are given due credit. Unfortunately there is apparently one notable exception - he will probably tell you about it himself, as he is a regular contributor to this NG. AS http://www.geocities.com/alex_sumner/
