The latter. Kelly tried his hand at alchemy in Europe for six years after he and Dee broke up in 1589. There is quite independant evidence of his work for Emperor Rudolf II, while Dee was back in England. (Kelly died in 1595). I suspect what you are getting at is "what if only one person were solely responsible for the angel magic experiments?", but that is like saying that all the Dee diaries are fake.
