Chapter 1481: 

Geomancy By Drawing Lines 
and Augury from the flight of birds 

------

Book 23, Number 3898: 

Narrated Qabisah: 

I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) say: 
Augury from the flight of birds, taking evil omens, 
and the practice of pressomancy pertain to divination. 

Tarq: It is used in the sense of divination in which  
women threw stones [at birds, to make them fly - cat]. 

Iyafah: It means geomancy by drawing lines.

Book 23, Number 3899: 

Muhammad b. Ja'far said on the authority of 'Awf: 

'Tarq means to make the birds fly by threatening them. 
Iyafah means lines drawn on the earth.'

Book 23, Number 3900: 

Narrated Mu'awiyah b. al-Hakam al-Sulamy : 

I said: Apostle of Allah - among us there are men who practise 
divination by drawing lines. 

He said: There was a Prophet who drew lines, so if anyone does 
it as he drew lines, that is right.
