It is my understanding that the so-called "Collective Unconscious" is an
unknown part of the mind, from which are generated thoughts etc which are
not related to ones own personal history but are related to principles which
apply to humankind genrerally.

Jung first developed the idea of a "Collective Unconscious" when, going
through a psychological crisis of his own, he noticed that his dreams were
dividing into two groups: those related to his own past, and those related
to mythology generally.

I personally can think of three postulates to explain this phenomena, of
which only the third IMHO would remain unscathed by Occam's Razor:
1. The Collective Unconscious is inherited;
2. The Collective Unconscious is telepathic;
3. The Collective Unconscious is a natural tendency of the mind to latch
onto mythological themes.

It has never been scientifically demonstrated that the personal unconscious
exists. It is only presumed to exist because it explains a number of
phenomena in psychology that would otherwise be inexplicable if it didn't
exist.
