a soulmate is a partner whose psychospiritual make-up is
ideally compatable such that it encourages the development
of the individual in all ways conducive to their health
and serves to bolster their weaknesses where they are in
need. 

usually there is conflict and over-protective or stulted
mates are paired, leading to conflict or deformity in one
or both of the individuals.  too often there is a kind of
codependence (rather than interdependence) which makes
one or both responsible for the limitations in their mate,
rather than merely attending to these and navigating them.

the fallacious notion of the 'soul' derives from a false
dualism which includes the differentiation between the
physical and spiritual 'worlds'.  however, when seen for
what they are, these will be understood as two facets of
a single, object-subject experience, and the 'soul' is
the entirety of the person and personality which grows
from the birth of a human being if sufficiently nurtured.

the romantic concept of the 'single soulmate' is without
basis, there being no reason that any number of potential
mates may have a high degree of psychospiritual compata-
bility, though my experience is that truly mutually-
satisfactory combinations are rare and hard to come by.  

the best means of ascertaining if someone is your soulmate
is to spend a great deal of time with them.  if you find
that you are matched in taste and/or temperament then you
can at least presume the potential of local compatability
and if you have insight into yourself or the greater 
pattern of others then you may be able to predict with
some degree of precision the likelihood of compability
over the course of years (like looking at two trees and
determining whether their future growth courses will
conflict or coalesce). this latter skill is what has come
to be called 'match-making'.
