Many women prefer to masturbate face down -- I think the extra pressure
against the front of the pubic mound helps. I sometimes put a soft pillow
under my chest so that my neck doesn't get twisted. While this position
works better for masturbating with my hand, it can also work fine with a
vibrator -- you place the head of the vibrator between your clitoral area
and the bed, and let the pressure of your body down on it do most of the
work.

The trembly-leg sensation you describe, for me, is a sign that I'm maybe
halfway to orgasm... but the amount of time it takes to go over the edge
might be seconds or hours, depending on the quality of the stimulation and
my mindset.

You might consider getting copies of Betty Dodson's "Self-Loving" and Miyaka
Heart's "When The Earth Moves" for good information about masturbation and
orgasm.
