Here is the data I have collated on 108 and its appearance around the world=

1929 Concordat with the Mussolini government (which established the
Vatican City State as a sovereign secular entity)? Also, what is the
history of the use of the acre as a unit of area in the Italian
peninsula?

Indeed. One way that 72 and 108 form a pair is that 72 = (2^3) * (3^2)
and 108 = (2^2) * (3^3), so one gets the splicing together of twoness
and threeness to form patterns, which I think is core to the
significance of both numbers and of the two numbers as a pair. If one
interprets exponentiation in terms of getting spatial dimensions, in
each of the above products you get a square and a cube.

One can play in various ways, e.g. 72 * 108 = 7776 = 6^5 = (3*2)^(3+2)
and the arithmetic mean of 72 and 108 = 90, the number of degrees in a
right angle.
